Mayfields Community Centre
The Mayfields Community Centre Association, in Cramlington was formed in September 2003 to provide a link between local Residents, Blyth Valley Housing, Blyth Valley Borough Council and other agencies with an aim to improve the quality of lives for all residents and promote community spirit on the estate.
Bob Bertram, who is Secretary of the group and a previous winner of the coveted Marks & Spencer North East Sieff Award for an individual based in the community who best collaborated with business to benefit society is also a Tenant Director who provides that important link between Residents and the Housing Company, ensuring that residents views are heard and that residents can make an impact on services that affect their homes and the community.
The group has achieved many successes including revamping the Mayfields Community Centre. They also run a very successful luncheon club and have arranged day trips away for the over sixties and as well as family educational trips, day outings to Lightwater Valley, children’s Halloween and Christmas parties.
Their recent achievement has been the setting up of their own website, www.mayfieldcentre.com and they now feel they are reaching out to more of the community.
Future Aims of the Association
Following the group’s successful funding application from the Local Network Fund they have started to work with the North East Music Factory on a project called “ROCK ON” Rock School, specifically aimed at young people who face difficulties in accessing music. It is hoped to promote the benefits of communication and co-operation, building self esteem and confidence. The children learn composition, song construction and also learn to play musical instruments. The course started on 6 January and lasts for 12 weeks with an end appearance at the Carling Academy in Newcastle.
There will also be the annual resident trips organised this year as usual and details of these will follow.
